If owp application for inland is returned, do I need to leave Canada?

I have learnt that owp application is vital for maintaining a valid status, because only if you have applied for owp with the inland sponsorship, you could be in maintained status during the process of the owp.
Since I didn’t submit the 5556 Checklist of the owp, (I handed the other form and the receipt of payment), I am afraid they will return my owp application. My visitor status will be expired in late September, and I will apply for visitor extension ASAP.
But in the worse scenario, if my owp got returned and my extension hasn’t been approved, what would happen to me? Am I out of status at once and need to leave?

You'll have implied status due to the extension and will be fine to stay.
