if my pr card is under renewal, can i return from usa on landing papers

need to make a trip to US in 2 weeks but PR card is expired and I'm about to apply for PR renewal. Can I go by road and return by showing the landing papers or COPR.

Technically, you should be able to do this as long as you meet the 730 days obligationa and you cross in a private car (not commercial). I have a friend who has done this a couple of times. However, who knows? In this immigration business someone can meet some nasty officers and who seem to make their own rules.
