Those are good suggestions. For writing, what made a big difference in my written English was starting to engage in discussions on message boards and Facebook groups online, and trying to make all my posts as grammatically correct as possible. Google is a big help with this. For speaking, get a native English speaking Skype buddy or join some Google Hangouts to practice.

First of all to from 6 bands to 7 or even 6.5 takes lot of time and practice,, here are some tips they will definitely help u inshallah,
Listening : listen BBC news and try to understand each word with full concentration ,, u will notice many new word with actual pronunciation ,, and then search in dictionary (English to English) for meaning,, there is nothing better than BBC for listening ( BBC radio is recommended ). And do some practice tests ,, I recommend Cambridge ielts tests,,

Reading: This is the part where many students struggle ,, the problem is time,, so what I did, there are three section give 15 minutes to each section no matter how many questions u attempt after 15 minutes go for next section.. 45 minutes u must have attempted nearly 25 questions with ease write down the answer carefully,, now in last 10 minutes remaining 15 question will be easier as u will have background of story at least out of 15 hard question u will be able to correctly do 5 or 6 questions ,, 31 right answer is 7 band,, attempt all questions there is no negative marking,

Writing: in writing section 6 bands are easy,, 6.5 bands are bit difficult ,,while 7 band are really very difficult, for example there are 4 areas in writing ,, answer to question ,, coherration, vocabulary,, and say paragraphing ,, if u get 7 band in 3 areas and 6.5 in any of the area u will get 6.5,, and there are two examiners ,, so use wide vocabulary never use same words and structures, try to use complex sentence, and most important must clear ur point of view in very first paragraph and stick with it, u can get experience of different band answers in many books ( Cambridge I recommend) see how people get 8 bands so why not u at least 7..

Speaking: Many people believe this is the easier than other,, maybe it is ,, to get 7 all u need is quite fluent English, good grammar,, and u must be eager to speak don't give short answer like yes no, I don't,, give two or three line answer,, 7 bands are achievable ,, I recommend mirror practice ,, stand before mirror ask questions and give answer, u will struggle with many words,, like if someone asks u where u live ,, u want u want say "mera ghar xx mall se mutasil hai" means my house is adjacent to xx mall,,, In that way,,

Best of luck but to reach from 6 to 7 u need at least one and half month practice with full concentration,,

This might not make sense to a lot of people but this is what I believe..

Think in English...!!

dont think in ur native language and then convert it.. its not the right process.. its faulty.. takes too much time.. the key is to get so damn comfy with this language that it becomes a no brainer.. the flow needs to be smooth..

Treat the language with a lot of respect, and take it as ur own. It would start coming to u naturally.

The suggestions here are all good. Movies, and anything visual helps as ur brain better understands the visual stimuli.. Read english comics.. novels cud b too much for a newbie so start with the easy stuff..

I personally advise to stay away from huge courses and preparation materials. IELTS test ur ability to survive in an english environment. They are not looking for a scholar. So work on the simple n day today stuff.

Dont close ur self in a room n try to get better at it.. its just a language. try n make it a part of ur life and it shud get better for u..
Hope this helps..

All the best..

just to reinforce the views, and to show that it makes sense..
:)

no bragging intended though:
My IELTS scores for 2013:

General Training: 7.5 min All Bands (Total 8.0)
Academic: 7 min All Bands (Total 8.0)

no preps done..
They are not the best but okay..

All the best...
