Hi guys,

I’m a Portuguese citizen who’s been in Canada on a working holiday visa and my work permit expires on the 10th of April 2022. My common-law partner is on the same visa but his work permit doesn’t expire until the 13th of October 2022 and ideally I’d like to remain in Canada for another 3-6 months. I want to apply for a visitor visa (whilst I’m in Canada) to remain in the country for a bit longer but the information I can find online is a bit mixed.

Basically on the IMM5708 form I thought in section 3 that the "get a new temporary resident permit" would be the correct option given my situation however when I validate and try attach the form it won't let me, inferring that something is incorrect. However, when I change to the "extend my status as a visitor" option and validate, it does allow me to attach.

It might be a terminology/definition thing but wondering if I have applied for this correctly?

Appreciate any advice!

Nope, a TRP is not the correct option. You are applying to change your status to visitor and extend your stay in Canada. You'll be applying for a visitor record.

TRPs are a special class of visa for those who are inadmissible to Canada, typically due to a crime. This isn't what you need.

You should be following the instructions here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio.../services/visit-canada/extend-stay/apply.html
