Hey guys,

I've been living and working in Ontario for over a year and a half now on an IEC permit from New Zealand. It's coming to an end in January and there is no way I want to go home so I am trying to stay here!
My efforts through Express Entry are proving to not be as successful as I would have hoped and now it's looking like I need to just get myself a work permit.

As far as work permits go, how challenging is it to get one when working for smaller companies? I work for a video production company as a camera operator and editor, but it's not a huge company; there are five of us.
I'm afraid that I won't be able to get something and I'll be stuck with having to go home, which will be devastating and my girlfriend would not be pleased.

I've been looking at how I can extend my IEC as my job is not going anywhere and because of our size, my role is quite important. I've also started looking into the International Mobility Program but I don't know much about it. What are the success rates for this kind of thing? Our company creates videos that have a huge impact on Canada from work with First Nations to people with exceptional needs, so dare I say it my job has a positive effect on this country. I'm just not sure if I can convince the government of that.

Thanks,
Joe

1. The working holiday work permit (IEC) is an International Mobility Program, as a NZ citizen you can only apply once for 23 months.
2. If you want to remain, your employer is going to have to apply for a LMIA, pay the $1000 after advertising the position for at least 1 months in a number of publications and then demonstrate that there are no applicants who are PRs or Canada citizens who qualify for the position and you are the only qualified applicant.
3. The processing time is a long one, so if you employer wants you, s/he is going to have start now.
4. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=163&_ga=2.234900674.2140899544.1535653203-662066070.1515483461

Can I extend my permit as my job has been extended like there is the option on this page?
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/iec/extend-change.html

Or how about normal open work permits?

You can only extend your IEC if you hold a Young Professional or Co-Op stream IEC (vs. Working Holiday Visa). Do you hold a YP or Co-Op IEC?

Normal open work permits are only granted in very specific circumstances (e.g. you have a spouse in Canada on a study permit). Based on the info you've provided, it doesn't sound like you meet any of the criteria.

I do not hold either of those nor have I looked into them.

And a closed work permit would need a supporting LMIA?

Just realized you're a Kiwi - so you don't qualify for the YP or Co-Op.

Closed work permits generally require LMIAs. There are exceptions / exemptions - you'll need to research to see if you qualify.

Fun times lol...

Thanks for the information! This has been far more helpful than any of the Facebook groups that I'm a part of. I'm still confident that I'll stay in this country, I just don't know how I'll stay here. I think it's time to sit with a lawyer and find out. Or my girlfriend and I can always just elope lol.. Thanks a lot!

Have you lived with your GF for at least one full year continuously? What's her status in Canada?

Didn’t feel appropriate to start up a new thread for this question.
I have a qualification as an Arborist, what are the odds of obtaining a LMIA through that line of work? I know that world wide there is a shortage of them and I feel like I would have good chances.

Bit of a niche field, so you are unlikely to get anyone on the forum who can comment on that. You should start contacting companies to see if you can even find one willing to go the LMIA route.
