Hi

One requirement of getting IEC work permit is, you should not have dependents who want to come with you to Canada.

My spouse and child are already in Canada with me. Their visitor status is expiring in 2 months. I am getting IEC wp for a year.

When I purchace IEC health insurance, am I allowed to purchas FAMILY health insurance? or if I do so, then to CIC it would mean that my dependents are coming with me to Canada when I come/am here on my IEC wp, which is not fine with them?

My dependents will have other options to extend their status in Canada and will not stay here illegally.

I would appreciate any help.

You really are reading into this insurance item a little too far, save yourself some stress.

You simply need to have cover that will

a) cover you for the length of your permit
b) include repatriation to your country of citizenship

beyond that - they don't care what company you buy through, how many people are listed on the cover, how much you paid, if you have conflicting cover etc.

After all of this, it is highly unlikely that you will even need to show proof of insurance at the border crossing.

Thanks Ozlis. I went to the border today and got my IEC wp activated.
As you said sometimes they don't ask for insurance, but this officer asked for insurance and even read through it to check if it covers return to home.

As you said, having my family members names on the insurance was fine with them. But they said when I am on IEC my child can not for example go to school in Canada, because I cannot have dependents with me.

But and others will correct me assuming as you say in other posts your family has legal status in Canada you could apply for a study permit for your child if of school age as that would be independant from your IEC.

Although as with many entries on the CIC site seems to imply as long as you have a work permit and your child has a status in the country they can attend school without http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-minors.asp

Thanks Bs65. They actually said as my son currently has a visitor permit that was granted as dependent to my current closed work permit (not my IEC wp) he still can go to school.
That's why I asked them to let me keep my closed wp simultaneousely with my IEC and it took them a while to check and finally let me keep that. Because I think if they would in-validate my closed wp the dependent visitor permit of my son whould have become invalid too (I guess so and the officer actually seemed to think the same way).

So my son is fine for now, but that visitor permit will expire in two months! and I am trying to figure out if I can apply for BOWP now (I have received AoR). The reason I am not sure that I am eligible for BOWP is that I have a IEC wp that will expire in a year, and in my AoR CIC says if you have a wp that is about to expire you can apply for BOWP.

and even if I am eligible for BOWP, can I apply for a visitor permit for my son at the same time? or I must first receive my BOWP and then apply for him?

Any ideas?
