IEC expiring soon - do I have to resign from my job, or just take leave?

Hoping someone knows the answer to this.

My first IEC expires at the end of May. I have conditional acceptance for a new IEC but I am still waiting on my POE letter to seal the deal.

I am in a permanent, full time job. If the worst happens and I don't get my new visa before my current permit expires, I understand I can apply to remain in Canada as a visitor. So I will do this next Friday (as that's 30 days before my IEC expires). Obviously, at this point, I'll need to tell my work about my predicament too.

Could I just stop working as in, just take unpaid leave until I get my new visa, and then start up as normal? Or do I have to officially resign from my position and then they have to officially rehire me again??

My job is very specialised and they are in the process of drawing up a new contract, benefits package and pay rise for me so I know they want me for the job and wouldn't be thrilled about having to find someone to replace me.

1. The 30 days in advance is a "suggestion" by law, you only have to apply for an extension as a visitor on the day your status expires. (day before is better, and file on line)
2. Tell you employer that you are waiting for the POE letter, but you will have to stop working on the date the work permit expires. then it is in their ball park.
