Hello senior members,

Today iam layed off , iam on workpermit till april 7th 2010. My wife is working now and she is on open work permit. My question is that will my employer cancel my workpermit status, and if this happens will my wife's open work permit is also cancelled. My wife has open work permit ,since she is my dependent.
Please respond as soon as possible. Can my wife work on open workpermit till this year end, because we are planning to leave to India this year end.

Thanks,
Ravik

Even though you are not working, as long as you reside in Canada, your wife's OWP is still valid. Your employer cannot cancel your work permit.

I knowits an old thread but many it can help other people.

I am not sure about this so not saying this with certainty. What I have heard is that the Spouse work permit is connected to your work permit if your goes out for any reason their work permit goes out automatically as its connected with yours but then again there is a validity date on the permit which can be a different thing all together.Best source would be to check with immigration lawyer or concerned authority.

No, they are independent of each other until thier own individual expiry dates.
