I am an international student and I applied for a full time program in Manitoba and due to Covid, I was not able to travel and had to switch for part time since the workload was too much and lecture times. When I arrived in Canada the CBSA issued my study permit allowing me to work.
but when I worked for one week I found that Part time students are not eligible to work. I addressed to my manager for an immediate leave from the job. I changed my studies to a new university and a full time program allowing me to work again.
If I explain this in a letter when extending my study permit, will it be an issue ?
TIA

It's your duty to read the obligations and conditions of your entry permit. You may or may not have problems in the future renewing or applying for another temporary permit

thank You Very Much for your reply and taking time to reply. The entry permit itself mentioned that I can work and I changed my course to part time before entering Canada. Should I explain this under notes in my document list for study permit extension ?
thank you again for your time.

You can explain the mistake truthfully and hopefully you will be fine.

Did you start your studies and completed a semester or two before landing in Canada? If not, changing DLI after landing is the bigger of your problems. You should apply for a new permit if changing DLI prior to actively studies. You don't want a nasty surprise waiting for you couple years down the line when you need to apply for PGWP or SP extension.

When did you switch to part time? was it during scheduled break? If NO, then you can faithful explain to the VO when you apply and the action you took. No one can guarantee the outcome, but the fact that you were honest, VO may take that into consideration. And as asked by other member, when did you switch DLI? after completion of active semester or?

Hi Thank You Very Much for your reply and for your time. I completed a semester in that DLI here in Canada. I came to Canada halfway a semester and completed that semester here in Canada. Changed the DLI after I finished that particular semester.
It was actually a genuine mistake since the permit itself says I can work, I was following that condition and then I found that I am not eligible.
I will be applying for a SP extension soon.

Hello ! Thank You Very Much for your time and reply. I changed during the semester due to time differences (couldn’t come to Canada because borders were closed). I couldn’t actively participate for lectures due to time differences. I changed my course to part time in the middl of a semester. And I came to Canada in the middle of that semester as soon as the borders were opened.
I completed that particular semester and changed my DLI.

I sent an email to my program coordinator addressing my issue requesting to change the full time to part time due many mental health issues and time differences (a very big obstacle). The DLI program course I registered didn’t allow to apply for PGWP at the end of the program as it is fully online (the DLI is on the DLI list, the program is fully online). For full time I had 2 courses in the boot camp weeks (two weeks) and I dropped one because of the above mentioned reason and changed part time during the bootcamp week (beginning of a semester). The course I stopped was a masters.

Your SP says you can work, IF MEETING ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AS PER R186(F), (V) OR (W). MUST CEASE WORKING IF NO LONGER MEETING THESE CRITERIA.
Going part time meant you were no longer meeting the eligibility requirements as per the section R186 mentioned above. The onus was on you to familiarise yourself with your SP conditions. Make sure you don't try to use the excuse that "the permit says you can work" when you contact IRCC in this regard. Just accept it was your error in judgement and apologise for it. Don't try to hide it.

Thank You Very Much for your reply. I will genuinely explain the fault and the error in judgment from my end, apologize and explain the actions I took to immediately stop work. Also I worked 4 days and immediately ceased work as soon as I found that I am not eligible. Should I mention that the duration of my work before ceasing?
I also have proof (the email I sent to my manager explaining my situation that I will be ceasing my work due to an error of interpretation of the conditions and consider my service as volunteer but the company policy didn’t have such yet paid for my 4 days of work).

I believe you have shown good faith in attempting to rectify your error. That's the best you can do. Keep all the evidence that you have. Then carry with life as usual. If you are now registered full time and school is in session, you can work 20 hours per week without worry.

Thank You Very Much for believing in me. I did what I can do to best make sure to comply. I will attach all my evidence with the letter I will be writing to be submitted for supporting documents.

Sorry to hear about your mental health issues, and I can agree with you if your intention is to immigrate through educational program, then switching to the other DLI make sense, provided that the current one doesn't make you eligible for pgwp. I wish you all the best, hopefully everything will be okey.
