Currently trying to figure out which work permit to apply for after receiving a job offer from my future employer in Alberta, CA.
Also wondering how to find out if I'm eligible to be visa exempt? I was going down the path of acquiring an LMIA but if I can be visa exempt that would cut out a lot of time waiting for approval.

Thanks.

I’m not an expert on what type of work permit but the only people who can work in Canada are citizens and permanent residents of Canada. If you are neither, you cannot be exempted.

Visa exemption usually relates to being able to enter Canada without a TRV but this is for tourism purpose only and one cannot work just because one comes from a visa exempt country.

Most jobs require approved LMIAs before you can apply for a work permit.

On what basis do you think you are LMIA exempt? What kind of job / occupation is it?

EDIT: I see from your other post that it's a Bar Manager job. You definitely need an LMIA and work permit.

You don't apply for an LMIA, as that's the employers responsibility. Without it, you are almost certainly not entitled to a work permit.

Do you speak French? If you speak French fluently, that is the way how to avoid LMIA.

You'll need to get your employer to apply for an LMIA. They do this by showing that they made reasonable effort to hire a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident for your job but you were the best fit. You're looking for a closed work permit that is specific to your employer. You can only apply for this work permit after your employer gets an approved LMIA.

Hope this helps!
