I applied for a visitor visa and received a visitor record

I have an open work permit linked to my partner's PGWP. I have applied for a visitor visa inside Canada since the visa I have on my passport expired with my previous work permit. Instead of a passport request, I received a visitor record in the mail.
I was told by an acquaintance that my visitor records cancel my work permit. Is that true?
Has been anyone in the same situation?
