does anyone know what one needs to do if he/she wants to travel from canada to US while waiting for PR card to arrive? The us trip will approximately be about 1 week long and the information on the website regarding travel document says that it can only be applied outside canada.

What passport do you hold? And are you flying or driving?

a non visa exempt country
Then if flying, you must have a PR Travel Document or PR card to board an airplane to Canada, no exceptions. If you don't have time to get a PR TD, then simply put you can't fly back to Canada or you need to wait until your PR TD is processed and received.

Or you can drive across the border. For this all you need is your passport and COPR. No PR card or PR TD necessary.
