Hi,
I was thinking on how to transfer money from India once I arrive in Canada on PR. I was thinking of few options:
1. I have stayed in Canada, so I hold a bank account in Canada. Right now I don’t have any status but the bank officer told that you can still maintain this account if you are coming back in few months .So the easiest option for me is to transfer but my concern that immigration officer may ask me POF and I can show the bank statement . But will he question me back on how I have been maintaining this account as I didn’t have any status.
2. Taking money in FOREX card from HDFC or ICICI bank. But they don’t provide any statement. So I would be having money but the issue is that I don’t have any POF like bank statement
3. Take cash and declare money (as I am carrying more than $10,000) on the border and fill the form. But I think it’s difficult to arrange cash as per RBI guidelines.
I know there are many people like me who would be same situation. So I would like to know how people have carried money with them when they landed for first time.

Use remittance and transfer the money to your Canadian account from your Indian bank account. Kotak and Scotia bank have tie-ups. There will be a fee to transfer the money.

After transferring the money, ask your bank in Canada to provide a statement of account which you can use at the port of entry. Ask your bank, they know everything about this. No need to carry any cards or cash.

Will they wont ask How I am maintaining bank account despite of not having any Status

Do one thing. Close that account and create a new one when you are about to land to be safe. I don't know the laws yet :P .

Till then, show that money in your Indian account. Give me your email address, I'll forward an email I got from the Scotia Delhi branch. It has everything you and many people would need. :)

You can have a bank account in any country even if you don't live or have a valid immigration status in that country. You can wire transfer your funds in India to the Canadian financial agency and carry the transfer documents and bank statements (both Indian and Canadian) to be covered. Wish you good luck.

You were in Canada and legally opened a bank a/c but returned back to India - so what's wrong if you are still maintaining that Canadian Bank A/c ?. Doesn't rich n famous maintain Swiss bank accounts ?

Only problem I see is that if you transfer money to that account then you will have only online statement (no stamp, no sign) which immigration officials might have issues accepting. But they can always call the Bank and verify the balance so shouldn't be a problem.

If you are still not convinced then open a new bank a/c with Scotia bank from their New Delhi branch, transfer money into it. Scotia will give you a certificate on their letterhead which is enough for immigration officials. After landing, you can close this account after approx. 90 days and there will be no closing charges.

Hope it helps. All the Best.
