How to proof your citizenship with RTD

Hello folks,

A friend of mine is a holder of the Refugee Travel Doucment, the document does not show her nationality. She is a Djibouti national and planning to travel to Ethiopia. Djibouti nationals are VISA free to Ethiopia but the issue is how can she proof she is a Djibouti National with he Airline clerk here in Canada as well as the immigration Officer at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia? Because she doesn't want to carry with her the Djibouti passport in fear that the airline clerk will put the Djibouti passport in the CBSA exit manifest which could be a risk of PR Cessation that at one point she used her Djibouti passport to leave Canada.

All RTD doesn't show nationality of the holder. Your friend should check entry requirement for Canadian RTD holder into Ethiopia, and should not carry her Djibouti passport. Because of close proximity to Ethiopia and presence of unofficial border entries, your friend may be subjected to secondary check, or may not.

Its not about proving she is Djibouti National, it is about checking entry requirement for RTD to Ethiopia. If visa is required for RTD to Ethiopia, then she needs one.

As explained above, it's irrelevant that Djibouti nationals are visa-free. Your friend needs to determine if a visa is required for RTD holders. She will be entering Ethopia as an RTD holder and not as an Djibouti national.

Your friend has to change her mindset. She can no longer think of herself as a Djibouti national. She has asked for protection from Canada because of fear of persecution in Djibouti so she is travelling as a protected person from Canada. Would also suggest your friend keep any documentation from her stay in Ethiopia (hotel receipts, proof of any daily transactions in Ethiopia, pictures daily in Ethiopia, etc.) because there can be concerns that she tried to enter Djibouti via land border once in Ethiopia.
