How to extend visa while away from Canada

Hello all. MY wife is from Thailand. She has a 6-month visitor visa ending today (Sept. 30). We asked for a 6-month extention but the problem is that we are leaving soon for the Dominican Republic to deliver a boat to the USA. The trip will take 4 months. What happens when Immigration Canada grants the visa extention to my wife while we are sailing the Bahamas? Thank you for any help on this. Does Immigration Canada require the passport to emit the visa or they just send an OK by email?

Unfortunately the extension will be effectively canceled as soon as your wife leaves Canada. Extensions are only good as long as you remain in Canada.

She will need to apply for a new visitor visa to re-enter Canada.

Oh boy oh boy... I assume, Scylla, that given your VIP status, your answer is quite credible. And I thank you for that. So this means, effectively, that a sailboat trip from the Dominican Republic to the USA (with a crewmember visa OK) will be impossible, since it is virtually impossible for my wife to ask for a Canadian visitor visa from the USA where she is limited to a 29-day stay as crewmember. I never realized the world was so complicated... being Canadian, and being able to travel everywhere with no hassle. So I guess we will cancel that trip, stay in Quebec and endure the long hard dark winter ahead of us.

Here's the info directly from the CIC web site:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=473&t=4

If you were just going to the US then you might be OK (provided your wife met the other requirements). But since your trip involves other countries as well, the extension will be lost as soon as you leave.

OK. Let's say I ask for new re-entry visa from Montreal, to be delivered say in New York City, go sailing for 2-3 months, go to the USA, ande pick up my visa in New York City, then yes, I could in theory go sailing and get my new visa in NCY and enter Canada? ("I" means my wife who is Thai.

I don't know if Montreal will send the passport to NYC (I assume you mean sending the visa to a friend's address in NYC rather than the NYC VO). Hopefully someone else will be able to answer that question.

At some point you'll need to submit her passport to the visa office for visa stamping. So you'll have to figure this out logistically.

What will you do if your wife is refused? Will she fly home from the US?

OK. I think we found a solution. Fly from Canada to the Dominican Republic (my wife gets a visa there automatically). Sail from the DR to the USA (my wife has crewmember visa good for 29 days). Then, from the USA, fly to Thailand. While there, file for a new 6-month visitor visa to Canada. Once back to Canada, start permanent resident status procedures.

Or stay in Thailand forever... and just forget about Canada.

This, indeed, is a really complicated world...

If you and your wife stay in Thailand, being Canadian, you can also start your wife's permanent resident status procedures (outland spousal sponsorships).
