How long one’s passport should stay valid in order to apply for PR?

I don't know what that is... But if I were you I won't use my old passport for PR if it has only one year of validity left. The visa officer can't give you more visa duration than your passport duration

But unlike other visas or permits, PR means you stay in Canada forever. i believe it has nothing to do with PR as long as PR is issued before my passport expires?

I believe at the time of issuing ppr your passport needs to be valid for atleast 6 months. And considering they take around 6 months on an average to process an application, it would be advisable to have atleast 1 year valid passport. 2 yrs would be better because if your case is more complex then getting a pr could also take 8-12 months.

When final confirmation of PR i.e. Visa stamping is done on your passport, the last date of landing would be either your passport expiry date or medicals expiry date (whichever is earlier), so in that case if you passport expiry date is very nearby, it would give you very less time to wrap up stuff at home country and do the landing in Canada
