How long does a Study Permit last?

Does a Canadian Study Permit for an Australian exchange student heading to Montreal last longer than the period of study? If I wanted to stay in Canada a month or so after the semester ends, will the study permit still apply? Or do I need to apply for something else?

Then again, should I just extend the "expected duration of study" time on the application to allow for me to stay a few months after?

Study Permits are normally issued for a duration of a study program plus three months. The exception is if your passport expires earlier, in that case the study permit will be issued until the expiry date of the passport. I hope this helps.
