I really don't want to lose that money, but I want to pay before going to show we have good intentions. We would get the application sent off within a week of arriving, but we won't get to Canada for a week. And our printer is about to get packed.

Well Liza, I can't see that depositing the fees a month or a couple of weeks before sending the application being a problem. Back last year, when things were very slow at CIC. We deposited the fees in December and CIC apparently didn't open our application package or begin our processing until March.
I think you are good to go.
Please let us know when you get to the other side.
indeed- there is no "expiry date" for the fees, and since you need to cross the border, then you can pay in advance.
The only things that have expiring dates are the Police Certificates ( need to reach CIC max 3 months after being issued), and Medicals (valid for one year and determines the "best before landing date" on your visa).
Good luck,
Sweden
