Pretty much everything you need to know, as a starting point can be found on the cic.gc.ca website.

Regarding getting married before entering Canada, I'll leave that complication up to others to answer and advise upon. You are not yet married though, correct?

Typically a person coming from a visa-exempt county can stay in Canada for 6 months.

They can also apply for an extension of their visitor status at Vegreville - this has to be filed before the 6 months are up. Until Vegreville either approved or rejects the application for extension, the person has what is called 'implied status', meaning they're allowed to stay until they hear about the approval/rejection.

A person from a visa exempt country can stay up to 6 months legally in Canada under the visitor status. Since you have no temporary visa issued, how can you apply for an extension??

Simply exit the country and re-enter in order for you to get a new stamp in your passport. This stamp automatically gives you another 6 months from the day you re-entered the country.

However: it is up to the discretion of the officer at the point of entry to grant you a stamp or not. If he is not satisfied, he may grant you entry but not stamp your passport. In that case, the older stamp of the initial entry to Canada is valid until expiration. Even if the officer refuses to give you a new stamp, simply ask for one, sometimes it works.

You can apply for an extension because you are not extending the visa, you are extending your status as a visitor.
Upon entry, people from visa exempt countries are given the same status as anyone with a temporary visa - they are a visitor and that status can be extended.
See here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visitor.asp

It is not always as simple as going to the border. For one, Canada's a big place and the border isn't all that close to some places. Secondly, if you go to the border, you CAN be denied re-entry. Just because you don't need a visa to enter doesn't mean that they can't refuse you entry - they can and they will if they think you will be trying to stay too long or work in Canada illegally.
