How long before I get my open work permit?

Me and my wife (can citizen) have sent the application in the first days of February this year inside of Canada. I just wonder what is the average time span before they issue a work permit?

For sure it wouldn't be before you receive your AOR for the PR application.

AOR's seem to be taking about 4-6 months to get.

IRCC told me a few days ago that they are now only issuing OWP's (included with spousal sponsorship PR applications) after the applicant receives their AIP (Approved In Principle), and if this really is the case, you're in for a long wait - 6 months or more.

I'm a March 2020 Inland applicant and I'm still waiting for my OWP...

Looking at the spreadsheet, quite a few OWP's were issued this month to the 2020 July and August applicants. And a handful were just issued on April 22 to some of the 2020 August applicants.

As explained to me last week by an IRCC phone agent, while some recent, first-time OWP/Spousal PR applicants can slip through and get an OWP quickly, they are rare theses days. Most of the OWP/Spousal PR applicants we see who get their OWP's quickly already had some sort of status prior to applying for an OWP, like a student work permit, or a closed work permit - these OWP applicants tend to be processed quickly.

Rules and guidelines at IRCC seem to be changing daily, and as such expect their implementation to be inconsistent.
