How long before I can re-enter Canada?

I recently returned to the U.S., my native country, after living with my boyfriend for almost a year in Canada. I was there for 6 months on visitor status, and then I applied to extend that, so stayed another 5.5 months on implied status while my application processed. Unfortunately, I had to leave the country before I got word on my application. So how long must I remain in the US before I can return to Canada, even just for a visit? I know it's 6 months in, 6 months out per one year period, but from what I've heard that's not a steadfast rule? Is there a chance I could return before 6 months?

There is no black and white rule. Whether you are allowed into Canada and for how long is up to the CBSA official you encounter at the border. Since you have been in Canada for almost a year, it would be a good idea to stay outside of Canada for at least three months before attempting another visit. During that time, you should establish ties to the US like a job and rental property. It's possible you may be asked to show ties to the US when you try to re-enter.

The extension doesn't matter. It was effectively canceled as soon as you left Canada.

I'm just worried they'll see I stayed for a year and won't know that I had implied status.
