Just take your baby to a photographer and they'll get it done for you. The picture we took for our son's proof of citizenship looks horrible (he has a shocked expression from the flash), but we had to do it. In the end he got his citizenship certificate without any problems.

Hi Benas,

I will be in the same boat at the beginning of next year as my wife will deliver while we are still waiting for her approval by Immigration Canada. I looked a bit over the forms to fill for my baby also in order to transfer my Canadian Citizenship to her. And yes I came up with the same question as you. Now thinking logically (that's what I always do at work as I am an engineer :D) of course a small baby does not have any picture IDs. Even kids that are not so small usually do not have any picture IDs except maybe a passport. But this does not apply in our case as you are applying for the citizenship (and probably you are applying for a limited validity passport at the same time).

My way of doing this, is not bring any picture IDs, but write a small letter, one paragraph not more stating that this is a baby born abroad and applying for citizenship, no IDs for a one month old. Also, since you have to submit it to the closest Canadian embassy, I suggest submit the application package in person and explain the situation to the embassy personnel. They are responsible for receiving and will be able to help you out if you need something else for a baby since no picture IDs are available.I have been to a Canadian Embassy in the country of my wife and they were actually very nice in explaining me the process to obtain citizenship for my future daughter who is not even born yet. So embassy personnel is a good resource to be 100% sure.

Maybe some other people have had this experience and cane share with us?

It ain't going to happen. You don't submit the photos, you won;t get a citizenship card nor a limited validity passport for the child.

You are right PMM. You have to submit baby pictures for both the citizenship certificate and the limited validity passport (or any passport). And there is nothing there, just bring the baby to a photographer and he will do the pictures within 10 minutes no matter how young the baby is. But the citizenship application also requires to submit photocopies of two picture IDs, and the initial question was about that. Of course babies do not have any picture IDs and but you need to just let the government know that you know that you need them, but can't provide them as babies do not have IDs.

well it says "Two (2) pieces of personal identification, such as a driver’s licence and a health insurance card, one of which must have your photo on it." so it says right there that only one has to have a photo on it... We used our children's US passports but I know in a lot of places if you take your child to the local DMV they also make state photo id cards so I would look into your local place that issues drivers license's and see if they do something like that or get their passports done.

The photo IDs are NOT for the baby! They are for the Canadian who is applying for his/her child's citizenship certificate.

We applied for citizenship certification for our 1 month old and yes we did have to have photos. The photo specifications are not so strict with babies under 12 months of age, it says so even on the photo specification page.
