Since some people here keep saying having a life, working and paying taxes in Canada doesn't have anything to do with citizenship, could someone please tell me how I'm supposed to earn this privilege?

I'm feeling a crisis here as I'm doing all of the above but these things are irrelevant to citizenship? I must do more to earn my citizenship so please help me!

You can earn it simply by residing in Canada for 4 years out of 6, file your annual income tax, maintain your residency and stay out of trouble. Nothing more. It is that simple. What is so hard about that.

Like everyone else is telling you, paying taxes or having a job has nothing to do with qualifying for citizenship.

That destroys what I perceive as "earning". It seems not doing much is earning while doing a lot is not :-\

To be granted with Canadian citizenship has never been difficult task to be achieved.

So by working and paying taxes earns you the rights to citizenship? Is that what you think?

You simply EARN the right to apply for citizenship by residing in Canada at least 4 years after PR. Nothing hard about that.

Can you give me an example of a country whose citizenship laws requires people to have a job in order to qualify for citizenship?

No. Maybe there's some country but I'm not gonna search for that. What I'm really saying is, what you define as "earning" citizenship, is not quite "earning". One can pretty much sit around in Canada for four years to get citizenship. That citizenship is not earned by dictionary...

To earn something, you need to toil, work hard, sweat it out.

I would personally refrain from using the term "earn" citizenship. But instead "qualify" or having met the requirements to become a citizen.

I understand where you are coming from. You feel that when you get Canadian citizenship, it doesn't mean that much to you since a person can sit around collecting welfare for 4 years can also get citizenship as well. I understand the conflict you are feeling.

You are free to fight that change to include paying taxes as part of the requirements for citizenship.

You do realize that what you are proposing is discrimination.

First of all, ask yourself a question - can anyone from any part of the world come to Canada and sit around for long ?
1. You would need to get in legally (sh*t load of paperwork showing that you worth to get in)
2. Apply for the PR after some years (try to do it without working, paperworks again and tests)
3. Apply for citizenship in 4 years after PR (tests, paperwork)
don't you think that just going through all these steps can't be called earning?

You are mostly talking about earning PR status in Canada. After PR, it's just "qualifying" for citizenship, like CanadianCountry said.

I have to agree with ZingyDNA.

Step 1 and Step 2 earns you PR status. Nothing to do with citizenship.

Step 3 is all that is required for qualification for citizenship. Just plainly being in Canada physically for 4 years. You can be doing absolutely nothing and still qualify to apply for citizenship.

You've missed my point, you would need all the steps to apply for Canadian citizenship, and it's not easy to do.
Yes, of course you can stay PR forever and not apply for citizenship, but you can't apply without going through first two steps.

From your understanding if I can get my Canadian passport in 10 days, that means I haven't earned it ? (I use Canadian Passport as tangible equivalent of citizenship)

If the law says you qualify to apply for Canadian citizenship after 10 days of PR, then yes.

But that is not the law. It is 4 years minimum out of 6 years.

Law says you can qualify to apply for citizenship after; you legally entered the country, became PR, lived 4(in 6) years in Canada after receiving PR. Tell me I'm wrong on this one.
With my passport example I tried to underline the absurdity to differentiate all the steps and ask the question how one earns just the citizenship.

I understand your point of view. You wouldn't be able to even apply for citizenship at least until you get PR status first. So 1st and 2nd step is required before you can begin your citizenship qualification.

The thing is once you have PR, you have no obligation to continue your next step for citizenship. So really, all the work you did, gave you the right to EARN PR status.

If you want to earn your right to apply for citizenship, you only need to reside in Canada 4 years minimum as PR. Nothing more. You can sit on your arse collecting welfare or working paying taxes. It doesn't matter. You qualify for citizenship regardless of how you managed your life in Canada.
