how do you preserve PR status

Dear All,

Say I have lived in canada for 5 years now. my pr card has expired. PR is given for 5 years right?So after the 5 th year, is there anything I need to do to renew the PR. PR card is needed only if i'm going out of the country. if i continue to stay here like for example 10 more years and i don't need the PR card is there anything that needs to be done at the end of the 5th year?

No, there is nothing that needs to be done at the end of the 5th year. If you find that you have a need for a valid PR card you can always apply for one. Keep in mind however that it takes 3 months to get it so if you have to travel on short notice, it is nice if you already have one.
