My husband and I have a somewhat unique story. We met in Toronto while he was visiting for the summer from the US and fell in love quite quickly. We married after spending three amazing weeks together, at city hall, with a very simple but beautiful ceremony. This was almost two years ago and we are still married as happily as can be. He has spent time with my family in New Brunswick and I have spent lots of time with his family in Kentucky and they can attest to how happy we are together. We have met and spent time with each others friends. We visit each other back and forth constantly, we send each other postcards and we talk on the phone (well, video Skype) for hours every day that we are apart. We have similar goals in life and intend on achieving them together (ie: children). Our relationship is absolutely genuine.

My main worry is that the fact that we married so quickly will work against us. Does anyone have a similar story? What sort of documents did you send to prove your relationship is genuine (ie: so that ultimately you can be together because you love each other)? It took us this long to finally decide that Canada is where we want to be and I am hoping that the two years that we spent married will work in our favour.

Currently we are waiting for the FBI clearance and in the meantime we are preparing the other necessary documents for the application. He is in Kentucky now and we are applying outland. The way that I see it because our marriage is a genuine one he shouldn't be denied PR but I know that bureaucracy doesn't always work that way. Any advice/words of encouragement would be much appreciated! :)

they want to know how your relationship began and how you keep contact. So what we did is we sent in copies of everything. I mean EVERYTHING. Pictures of everything we did and where we went, with his family and our traveling with relatives and going on outings. My husband is from India so any special events like weddings in the family I attended we sent pictures of that. Wedding pictures and those that were at the wedding and honeymoon even if it was just a night in hotel, send in the hotel bill. We travelled by train alot through India. So we send in train etickets and boarding passes for flights. We sent in phone bills, chat logs, emails, print off text messages and any cards we gave each other, your post cards and love letters, if you have joint bank accounts or credit cards. Any communication you have with his family and them with you and the same with your family. Anything that shows you have a life together. You send in copies of everything like that. We wrote an essay about how we met and how our relationship grew and how you feel about each other and what your plans for the future are. We even got letters from friends and relatives that could honestly talk about our relationship. I did this and so did my husband. If you explain why it has taking you a while to descide what country you wanted to live in. Explain everything clearly and I dont think you will have any problems. Its alot of ink for the printer and alot of copying but the more you have to show the more convinced and solid your case it. Good luck :)

Thank you so much for your reply! I am a meticulous person so this type of thing is right up my alley. I will try to supply as many details and hard facts as I can with the initial application (well organized of course!). Would it help to have notarized letters from family members who have met him? My family, who were initially shocked that I got married so quickly, completely understood as soon as they met him and are very much in support of our marriage. Friends as well.

We want nothing more than to finally be living and working in the same city. I know that the road to PR can be a long one but I am trying to be patient, especially with the FBI clearance.

Like I said in another post, we have been married almost 12 years and so I will provide copies of our tax returns for all of those years, copies of bills showing his name and our address and my name and our address or both of our names together. Life insurance policies, 401k accounts with beneficiaries, letters from my parents and my god mother and also friends. A written narrative of our life and our trips, pictures from all of the years we have been together, forms we have filled out for our daughters school and I am thinking of getting letters from her teachers stating that we have attend parent teacher conferences together every year.

I am hoping that will be enough.

My husband and I have been living and working in different countries so unfortunately we don't have any of those things to offer the CIC. I am hoping that pictures, records of visits and communication, family testimonials and our love will be enough!

I would think that your 12 year marriage, coupled with all of that paperwork, that that would be proof of a genuine relationship!

We didnt have things notarized we just asked them to write about us and put their address and phone number and sign it. I just felt that if they had phone numbers immigration would see that we were being honest and they could freely contact to prove out any statement. I have a 13 and 11 year old and they wrote a letter about their step father and they signed their names. I dont know what good that did but my sons wanted to do it. Its good you are meticulous because its been my experience that you have to be. If you explain everything clearly and show information up the waazoo its well in your favour.
By the way where in NB are you.. I am in NB too. :)

Yes you will need to translate from Spanish to English or French. It may help to be selective regarding which evidence you plan to include so that you can minimize the translation work. And definitely yes, copy the stamps in your passport (and his) to include in your proof. And, by the way, I think most people on this forum would prefer if you didn't type in all caps. Good luck with your application.
