Hello there,
I got to this forum out of my curiosity, but i must commend you guys for a great job here.
I am a citizen of Nigeria and i have a job that i am doing here since about a year ago, and i have a family that lives in Canada, as a Canadian citizen, i have a wife and a child there and they live together .They often visit me occasionally and or we meet in the UK just to spend the season together as one family especially the Christmas season. Our relationship is up to 7 years and have a child of about 6n years and we have been seeing each other every year when ever she comes home . we were legally married and also traditionally married, but the issue we have faced all this while was the fear of how to start the application on ;
1 where to start from either from Nigeria or some where else
2 My wife got on welfare support just so she can be able to monitor the welfare of the child very well
3Also may be i should get an entry visa an then find a way to apply when i get there
4 May be i should apply from another country because of the history of Nigerian service

I sure want to be with then and be a father to them, so please with all this conditions i will like to have a word of advice on how to go about it and also where to go about it that way i will leave the cross road that i am ..i am so confused .

Thank you.

As far as I know, if she is on welfare she will not be able to sponsor you. Hence, you can't apply for a PR unless she is off that and is working.

Something to consider:

1. Were you and your wife already married when she became a resident of Canada?
2. As mentioned above your wife cannot sponsor you when she is on welfare.
3. You have to apply from the country you are a citizen of, or resident of (minimum 1 year residency visa in another country) provided that you are not excluded under family class (re #1 above).
4. If you are able to obtain another temporary entry visa to Canada, provided that you are not excluded under family class (re #1 above) than you would be able to apply inland for spousal sponsorship.

Thank you so much for your replies,

Yes she has been a residing in Canada ever before we got married and also a citizen , Also steps to take in the application has been the issue and i will like to ask that if she is off welfare today can we start application the next month just so that Canada wont say she does not have enough funds or they have been helping her since and how is she going to sponsor ?

Thank you

You must wait one year before she can sponsor you after she goes off welfare.

And while there is no specific income requirement to sponsor, most likely CIC will look more closely at her and your finances because she was once on welfare. She or you (or both) may have to provide additional proof on how you two will be able to support yourselves financially in Canada.
