How do I get a US police clearance from inside Canada?

Hello.

I'm immigrating into Canada from the USA, but I'm living with my Canadian husband in Canada now, on a visitor visa. I've been advised I shouldn't leave the country, because I may not be able to come back until the permanent residence is done.

But what little I've found on the police clearance bit suggests I actually have to go to a US police station for it. If I can't leave the country, I'm not sure how to do that.

Thank you for any suggestions you have. :)

I am from Asia and I did not go to asia to get my police clearance. I went to the police station here in Canada or commisionaires and did the fingerprints. I sent it to my family and let them follow up my police clearance. There's another option though the embassy. You will pay for the fingerprints etc and they are the ones who will follow it up and mail to you the result. I don't know if this is true in your embassy but maybe you can call them and ask.

What State are you from? Look up the state police department from the state that you are from and there it will tell you how to get the Police record.

You don't have to go to the police station there all you have to do is go to a place like the commissioners office and get your finger prints and then send the finger prints with the application that you have to send (the application is the one that the state requires) and you send them the fee and write on there that its for immigration purposes. Even if you go to the the police department in the state you still have to send your finger prints to the main office with the the money and the application that they require.

For some states you don't even need the fingerprints. I got them from all the states I lived in and only submitted fingerprints to MI and IL (and FBI) - all other states accepted SSN, DOB and name. Did them all on-line or by mail. I didn't have to go to the PD. It's really easy and you have them within 2-3 weeks.

You can find information on ordering State and FBI clearances at this US2Canada link. They can all be ordered from within Canada, and most agencies will mail the results to you in Canada. The hardest part is getting the fingerprints done, but most local police stations will do them with an appointment for a small fee. You can print off a fingerprint card from the FBI website - the link is on the US2Canada page. Or you can go to a place like Commissionaires, but I think they're more expensive.

I was also having a similar problem of finding a place to get fingerprints. I was more concerned because I read that if the fingerprints are not clear, the FBI may return them after a long waiting time. I kept on searching and ultimately found a forensic company in Toronto (Worldwide Forensic Services Inc.) who take fingerprints digitally and print them on FBI card to make sure that the prints are clear for FBI check. Initially I thought that they will be more expensive than the other companies, but when I called them I was surprised to know that they charge just $39 plus tax for the service.
