How do I find a job to accept me for work before I move to Canada.

Hi all

I am currently enrolled in school in the U.S. and am married to my wife who is a canadian citizen.
I will graduate my school in the skilled trades here in the U.S. in 2015, so I am going to start my paperwork process now so hopefully it will get accepted in time around or before the time I graduate.

The college I'm attending is an accredited college here in the U.S. but will my degree count for much if anything in Canada?

I am looking to move to Calgary for that is where my wife lives.

My main question is, is it possible for me to contact an employer in my field in Calgary or around the area and at least and get some type of written agreement or guarantee so I will have a job when I move there?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks and have a good day

You don't give much information, like what trade you are talking about. Is it something that you need more than a degree? Like, do you require from certification from a professional body?

I think your degree itself will probably carry a lot of weight in Canada, so I wouldn't worry about the degree.

You can contact employers, but I don't think many would guarantee you a job without an interview in person first at least. Again, it may depend on what your field is. In some fields, qualified employees are in short supply.

It depends on your education and occupation field of work. There are a couple of options.

1. Temporary TN visa. If your occupation falls under NAFTA occupation qualifications, you would only need a job offer from an employer. You can take that job offer and apply for TN visa at Canada Border.

2. You apply for a work visa. You would require a employer willing to do a LMO and if passed, can offer you the job.

3. You move to Canada as a visitor and apply inland sponsorship. You can apply for Open Work Permit after you get AIP stage, around 10 months. The problem with inland sponsorship is that you must remain in Canada during the entire process up to 18 months.

My advice is since you are American, you apply for sponsorship outland. They have a faster process time, short timeline to land as compared to inland. You would be able to go back between US/Canada as often as you like. You could even work in US while PR is in process. Something for you to think about.

Sorry for the lack of information guys.

I am beginning the process for a family spouse package now.

My trade is called electrical major (associates degree), working with motor controls, automation and instrumentation.

I will be visiting Canada in May, which is still at least be a minimum of 6 months before I actually move to Canada. I will try and set up up interviews with employers to have an actual interview while I'm there.

Also I am considering getting into an apprenticeship to become an electrician when I arrive in Alberta, my general thoughts is that I would just stick to doing maintenance for a factory or company, just out of curiousity what are your thoughts on this. (maintenance or apprenticeship) or both.

Any other tips or knowledge.

Thanks

Thanks

From what I gather, you could set yourself up for interviews while visiting Canada. Keep in mind, never bring copies of your resume in your luggage while coming into Canada. That is a big no-no. You are coming to visit Canada not to work in Canada. Canada border agents can stop you from coming into Canada if they suspect you are looking for work while on visitor status.

While in Canada, you have to inform your employer at interviews that you require a LMO from them if they want to hire you. If they don't want to do that, you're out of luck.

Since you mentioned your field of work, have you looked into the provincial nominee work program. They are looking for people with your skills.

You will have to first see what credit you will receive for your program, compared to Canadian/Alberta standards.
Depending the actual course, you will probably need to work as an apprentice, while upgrading to the standards here, depending on the actual course.
I know the electrical standards are very different here then many/most US states.
Demand is high in Western Canada as far as trades go, most all are further north in the oilsands industry. Most smaller outfits are leary of hiring apprentices, since most all take off north to better money once they are done and move on, so it might be a challenge.
Good luck!
