Hi:

I am an American Citizen who just graduated from a good university with a degree in Economics. I want to be able to move to Canada and be able to legally work there. I am having a hard time finding a job without having a visa. Can someone tell me what the quickest way to get a visa is to work.

Thanks,

K. Kalyani

You don't need a visa to work in Canada, just a work permit. Apply for a job, and tell your employer that it's easy for you to get a work permit, that you all you need from them is just a job offer (if your job is among the LMO exempt jobs). If your job also isn't in healthcare, all you do is bring your passport, birth certificate, and job offer letter to a port of entry and apply there. Takes about an hour.

If you're a fresh graduate, I think it's better to get some experience first in a place where you're legally allowed to work, because sometimes your first 6 months is just training.

A friend of mine is an American who went to Canada to work. That's what he did.

It is not that simple for most of us, because most jobs are not LMO exempt.

These are the types of positions that are LMO-exempt.

In the OP's case, LMO-exempt positions are most likely to fall under NAFTA. In fact, "Economist" is on the list, if s/he can find a job as an economist fresh out of school -

Well, depending on your age, you might be eligible for the Youth Exchange program. I believe it's a six month WP for those approved from the US.

Understand its the JOB that has to fall on the NAFTA list, not you :)

If you can get a job offer as an accountant, your background may be accepted, but more likely if you have previous experience working as an accountant.

Both have to eligible under NAFTA. If it is an accountancy job for example, the applicant has to have a degree in Accountancy,

with the degree its just a Bachelor of Science it doesnt say ur major... like a person with an Accounting major would have the same degree i am applying and going to try and see if it works. In business all departments are linked one way or another. Accounting has to do with finance, even economy, just dont know if an IO will realize that!!
