How and When will I be issued SIN

Hi All,

I have a question regarding SIN.
I would travel on Friday and report to the employer on Monday. Let me know when can I get SIN? Is this issued at POE? Also, What are all the documents needed to get SIN?

Appreciate your help.

Not sure if some POEs can issue, think I had heard that somewhere. Even if they don't though, it's extremely easy. Just go to your nearest Service Canada with your passport and work permit and they'll give you a number immediately. They'll also ask for an address to send the actual card to.

SIN cards are are no longer issued, you won't receive one.

You'll receive your SIN while at the Service Canada on a sheet of paper, you can work right away.

You can start working from the moment they give you the number, so basically straight away, no need to wait for the card. It's really easy to do all those basic things right away in Canada. In my first day here, it only took me 1.5 hours to get my SIN, get an ID and open up a bank account. In my home country, I'd need about a month and countless trips back and forth.

Once again, Thanks beholder. Agree, have to wait for atleast 1 month for such documents in my country too. On top of it, ruthless govt officers. That is the reason we are trying to migrate to Canada where processes are simplified and people are friendly.

I can't say much about India as I've never lived there but I *wish* it was quite so simple in Canada, I've had many dealings with CRA and I've heard horror stories about EI & welfare in general (hopefully I'll never have to deal with that, but who knows?).

But honestly, I hope your journey to Canada works out! Good luck!

This changed since mar 31, 2014. Even before that all you needed was to have registered for it.

Giving your SIN info is mostly optional (unless you are going for a major tax, banking or other mortgage like major thing).

I can't say much about India as I've never lived there but I *wish* it was quite so simple in Canada, I've had many dealings with CRA and I've heard horror stories about EI & welfare in general (hopefully I'll never have to deal with that, but who knows?).

Canada is heaven when it comes to (at least the basic) public services when compared to some other countries and you're certainly lucky if that's the worst you have experienced. I can also relate to the "friendliness" comment. Back home the public servants would swear at you and kick you out of their office for no reason, just because you wanted them to do what they were paid for.

Good to know, although it's quite funny as the last people who came here than I personally knew of, arrived at the beginning of March, must have been among the last ones who received an actual card ;D

That is true. Life is tough when it comes to compromises you need to make on some basic rights. I am very happy out here in my country. However, if I have to spill money for getting the basic things you are entitled to, that is when frustration raises. When I was in US, I could see how people behave, talk and give respect.(At least 80%, I can say). Back here, unless you know the person, nobody cares.
