Housing noob questions

Hi, I will be going to Queen's, Kingston this fall and can someone let me know if I should search for an apartment once I get there or should I try to find one while here in India.
How to get the landlord to hold the place for me from here if that's recommended?

Best to search for one until you actually in town, so that you can compare one with the distance to school and other amenities.
