Hi all,

I am considering to apply for CEC. I am a foreign temporary worker in Canada, on a 2 -year work permit. The work is postdoc position at a canadian university and full-time. Since i work at a university, the full-time work hours is 35 hours per a week, NOT 37,5 per a week. I have read 37,5 hours per a week is the requirement. Is it a problem for me to apply just after completing my 2 year job. Or do I need to work more than 2 years to complete up 37,5 hours per a week.
My job contract clearly states it is full-time.
Your comments and advice would be very much appreciated!!!

If you are a student, you need 2 yrs. studies and at least 12 months of work and at least 1950 hours. If you are a worker, you need at least 24 months of work and at least 3900 hours@37.5 hours per week.

Thanks for your comment. yes, I'm a temporary foreign worker. I just thought since i will have completed 2 year full-time by next year, the hours of working don't matter as long as the job is 2 year full-time . I will have a letter from my employer stating that i have worked there for 2 years full-time. Still am I not eligible in this case?

As per CIC FULL TIME means 37.5 hours/ week. There are some rejections due to these hours conflict. You need to get those 3900 hours at the time of application and should be eligible. Your T4 n paystubs will be the proof.

Thanks for your comment. Yes it is a kinda conflict.
So the only option for me is to extend my contract for further a few months to get the 3900 hours. Thanks for comment. Let me see and ask my employer if he can extend it for a few months.
This T4 slips does show the exact working hours?

As far as submitting T4....yes it is a vital document to prove that you have WORKED legally but it DOES NOT MENTION THE PERIOD OF YOUR WORK, which is extremely important in your case. If you check the T4 you will just find the YEAR of income but it does not specifically mention the EXACT PERIOD (date and month). T4 has ur deductions and the amount tax paid to CRA.
So, IMO, you would be safe if you provide all the pay stubs, bank deposits of your salary in support of "gainful employment" in addition to T4. Also include any other proofs that is necessary to strengthen your case.

SIGH. You do not need pay stubs, bank deposits or anything that is not mentioned on the document checklist. All you need to provide is what is on the document checklist.

Your period of work must be specified by your employer in your letter of employment.

There is absolutely NO CONFLICT between CEC requirements and the 35 hour work week. Yes, you will have to work longer than 2 years - 2 years and 2 months (112 weeks, to be exact) - to meet the 3900 hour requirement.

I also work at a university, with a *minimum* work week of 33.75 hours stipulated in my contract. So I had to work 2 years + 3 months.

I've worked for 45 hours per week for the past 20 months, 3915 hours in total. Would that make me qualify?

How do I prove the numbers of hours that I worked? Should I show work materials that prove that I worked for longer than 40 hours a week? Maybe emails?

No, you do not yet qualify. You must work a minimum of 24 months AND 3900 hours. The hours you work per week must be specified by your employer in the Letter of Employment.

3900 hours is used as a target for "part-time" applicants who do not meet the federal definition (37.5 hours per week) of full-time employment.

green_dc,

I think you would have agreed with your direct supervisor on how many hours to work, which could be more than the 35hrs expected for permanent staff in your university. If it turns out that your agreed time was 37.5 hrs/week (or more), then you would have accrued the 3900 hrs required within 2 yrs. An employment letter from your employer stating this number of hours should suffice, I believe.

On a different note, I am also a postdoc and receive both T4 and T4A slips at the end of tax year (with my annual income and tax stated on the T4A). Does this apply to anyone else who has applied under CEC? Is the fact that income tax appears on the T4A slips sufficient for CIC considerations? Any previous applicants with similar cases, kindly share your experiences!

Hi Cos,

I haven't checked with this form for a while. Just now i saw your comment. Thanks for it.On my job offer letter, it says for 2 year full time. This does not specify the hours I need to work. To my understanding, full time means 35 hours per week at a university. I do work more than 37.5 per week. If my supervisor states i work more than 37.5 says, is it enough?

For your question, I think CEC ask for T4 tax. But I am not sure. Since you have both of them, i guess you are good.

CIC will take whatever is written in your employment letter - should be from Human Resources on their letterhead, and they should be willing to confirm that if needed. Email them and ask your supervisor to confirm the work hours.

I work 32.5 hours per week, had to wait 54 weeks or so before applying.
