Hello!
My father had a cardiac arrest and was admitted to the hospital. Now he has bypass surgery. The total hospital bill is coming out to be 200k and the insurance is 100k.

if my father signs the forms and not able to pay the money, will hospital come after me?

No but if there is no prospect of collecting any payment any follow-up non-emergency care can be refused.

Depends on where you are and what document did you sign. (or if your father was the only one who signed any form)

My MIL's bill came to us. So yes. we paid. ~ 50k. She had other medical issue that only a small portion was paid out by the insurance company. That was before there was supervise. So I am not sure if supervise insurance will have more coverage of the bills.

But they will go after your father. Have a discussion with the hospital and see if they will allow a lower payment and a payment plan.
It's good to purchase more than the minimum coverage.

And your father is unable to set up a payment plan ? Or you’re not able or don’t want to ?

We want to set up the plan but they don’t want to. We have already paid 25k upfront and that is all I have. I used my line of credit to pay it. My intention is to pay. But installment would be better. But they say that since he is 70 they don’t want the payment plan.

That is because many don’t end up repaying. Your father should be making plans to return to his home country for care as soon as it is possible.

Curious what hospital system or at least what province/city? Many hospitals are running deficits and suspect some hospitals are facing more pressure from non-provincial healthcare holders than others. Wonder if this is a new trend.

I was surprised too. Since I am a citizen of this country and did provide underwriting that I will pay his bills in case he does not. I am not running anywhere or denying it, just saying the payment plans. I am going to the legal advise for this one now

Sadly even with a payment plan 100k is not something that most people can pay off over even a decade and a significant debt. Also hospitals run on tight budgets so waiting for payments or non-payment does impact how a hospital can run. Who gets paid and who doesn’t with the 100k supervisa insurance also becomes an issue. If not salaried do the doctors time get reimbursed first? Medical supplier will have to get paid or they will stop sending supplies. Most likely it will be the actual hospital that will bear the cost of the 100k so will have to find room in their operating costs to cover the 100k until you can pay it off. That would mean one less senior nurse who can be employed this year. Do they continue providing non-emergency healthcare and add to your outstanding bill? Many will not. It is just too much of a risk. Most hospitals are running at a deficit so no wiggle room and they don’t want to have to fund your debt.
