Hello everybody,

I am recently processing my new passport with which I am going to apply for

nearing 2015 IEC!

My new passport expiry date is a year starting from may 2015 to end may, 2016.

Would this passport suffice should the 2015 IEC quota to open up before/after

this time around may and I perhaps get a spot a midst?

Anyone gets in on this program or looking to participate please

provide me tips or advise, will H-1 visa issued based upon passport's expiry date?

or do I need extended expiry date that is longer than what will be my WHC visa?

Thank you in advance, Bee

If I understand correctly your passport will be valid from May 2015 - May 2016? Interesting time period, I might add (most countries I know of are 10 years for adults).

In any case, to apply for the IEC you need to have a valid passport. This means you will need a passport when it opens, usually anywhere from November-February (although, March seems possible this year).

The same passport will be needed to get your WHP, although some exceptions are made if the passport is lost or stolen (but that's some headache you'll want to avoid).

Point of clarification:
  • The H-1 visa is an American work, dual-intent visa. It provides the applicant with a visa and work permit to live and work in the US for the specified employer.
  • The IEC Working Holiday Permit (WHP) is a Canadian open work permit. It provides the applicant with a work permit (only) to work in Canada for 1 or 2 years (depending on rules of your respective country's IEC program and passport dates), without limits on employer.
Additionally, countries eligible for the IEC program typically do not require a visa to visit Canada. However, if your country does, you might need a separate visa. See: cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp for visa necessity.

Sorry if I seem to be dwelling on semantics; just being clear in case there is confusion. ;D

That said, when you are issued your WHP at the border it will expire in 1-2 years or with your passport, whichever comes first. Such that for:
  • Arrival - 5th May 2015, with an expiration 5th May 2016. The WHP would expire May 4th 2016
  • Arrival - 5th August 2015, with an expiration 5th May 2016. The WHP would expire May 5th 2016
  • Arrival - 4th April 2015, with an expiration 5th May 2016. The WHP would expire April 3rd 2016
assuming one year (it varies between countries). See: cic.gc.ca/english/work/iec/index.asp for time periods

May I ask what country your passport is for? It may better help us help you.
