Hi,

I am currently in Ontario on a post graduate work permit till March 22, 2013. One of my friends who owns a company has mentioned that he would offer me a position in his company but I would have to do the groundwork myself for the LMO but he would support me in it.

Could you please guide me about how do I go about with the LMO process.

Thank you

You don't need a LMO since you have a PGWP(post-graduate work permit). Note that if you plan to apply for permanent residence, the job must be skilled(falls under NOC O, A or B).

About 4 months before your PGWP expires, your employer has to apply for a LMO. Since you were hired under a PGWP, your employer does not have to show recruitment efforts.

Also, if he or another employer offers you a permanent position in a skilled job, they do not have to show recruitment efforts. See this: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/intstugrad.shtml

Information on LMO:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/publications/tfw-guide.asp
http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/fwp_forms.shtml - choose the application that best suits the skill level of your job

A word of caution:
Working for friends is always risky, so you may want to have a frank discussion with your friend before you become his employee. Be sure that you are both honest in the LMO application and that whatever salary stated in the LMO is what you will be paid and that it is similar/close to salaries paid to Canadians or permanent residents working in a similar position. Also, get a clear description of what your main duties and responsibilities will be - you need it determine whether your job is skilled and when you apply for PR.

Some members have been taken advantage of so you should go into it with your bases covered.
