Hi everyone,

I am just looking for some assistance with regards to the process of sponsoring my husband. We are both originally from Scotland however I have been in BC, Canada for the last 5 years - recently became a Canadian . I have been in and out of the country over the past few years but I'm currently back in Scotland now studying.
I've had a long distance relationship with my husband for the past 2 years and recently we decided to tie the knot so we could be together hopefully in Canada. We have not lived together in a set address but this has been going on for sometime so I'm not worried about all the other applicable documentation I'll need to provide when I apply.
I haven't worked over the last 12 months as I did some travelling and as I say I'm back in Scotland completing some further studies. My plan is to finish this in January and then hopefully get the ball rolling with us both relocating out to Canada.
I am concerned about the financial requirements associated with this? I read previously when you're sponsoring a spouse you do not have a minimum financial requirement, is this true? I have some savings but no proof of income in the last 12 months from my tax assessments

Could somebody please clarify if I have to meet some criteria with respect to financial requirements when sponsoring my husband to relocate to Canada?

Thank you for you help,

Sarah

There isn't a financial requirement in regards to sponsoring your spouse but you cannot be on welfare or any government assistance besides disability.

Thanks for the reply Dominic, it is greatly appreciated.

I think over the past few years I have received provincial tax credits which is like 100 dollars everyone 3/4 months - would this be classified as government assistance?

Would I need to provide any statements of how I would be able to support my husband upon arrival in Canada? My husband has savings so hopefully this would be okay?

Thanks again

Thanks for the advice guys, could somebody just clarify what would be classified as government assistance? I can't seem to find anything that outlines these parameters

There are sponsor's who are on disability and get approved. From what I have seen and understand, it's relative to welfare.

So having no relative income in Canada and receiving this provincial GST/HST Tax Credits should have no effect?
One final question - I haven't had MSP out in BC for at least 1 year but if I recall I was getting subsidised to use this - would be classified as government assistance and if I applied after 12 months of discontinuing it would that even be considered?

Sorry for all the questions , I really appreciate your help

Sarah

Disability is fine.....welfare is not!

Hey guys,

I am just in the process of filling out my forms for sponsoring my spouse.

I have a little problem with the employment element as I have been in and out of employment a lot over the past 5 years.

Do the officers have access to your tax returns? Or alternatively do they get in touch with your previous employers? Or do they just get in touch with people if they suspect anything?

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
