My wife is Canadian, she is currently living in canada with our daughter, we finished the sponsorship application, we thought would be better if she went first to Canada while I stayed in Portugal, where I am citizen, my question is could I apply for any kind of permit to go and work in canada while I wait for the result of the sponsorship application otherwise I have to stay separated from my family for how long?

You do not qualify for an open work permit tied to the spousal sponsorship application since your wife sponsored you using the outside of Canada (outland) process.

If you want to work, you need a job offer and approved LMIA from an employer in Canada so that you can apply for a closed work permit tied to that specific employer.

If you are 35 years old or younger, you can also look into the IEC / Working Holiday Visa program.
