Help needed: Switching to an open work permit after getting a regular one

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’m in a bit of a tricky situation regarding my work permit for a 3-month internship in Canada. I’m currently in Belgium, and I’ll be working for an internationally oriented company.

At first, my company asked me to get an open work permit, but I wasn’t aware of this and applied for a regular work permit instead. This application was approved: I’ve received the letters for biometric fingerprints and the work permit.

The problem is that now I absolutely need an open work permit. When I try to start the process online, at the final summary stage, they ask me to pay fees for:

  • the open work permit ($100),
  • and the regular work permit ($155).
However, I already have the regular work permit. I’m wondering how I can proceed to pay only for the open work permit fees. If I pay for both and reapply (even though I already have a regular work permit), could this create an issue or lead to a refusal?

Has anyone here faced a similar situation? If so, how did you resolve it? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!
