I received an email stating my application had been updated to sign in to my cic account, when I went in I found nothing and my status open..

What does it mean? Was it an error or what?

It happens all the time. We are all just speculating that it happens when the CIC accesses your file, whether or not they actually do anything doesn't seem to matter. So, don't worry about it.
