Hi guys!

I need some help! I am a British citizen and currently in Canada on an IEC OWP and it is due to expire on March 14th. I am getting married in August and I really really need to stay in Canada. My preference is to work but I don't think I am eligible to apply under any of the programs. I can apply for common law but I wont be able to work until stage 1 approval. So I think I need to stay as a visitor.

What are my options?

Can I just drive down to the States the day my visa expires, turn around and come back in and be issued a tourist visa? What would my requirements be for this? How long would I be allowed to stay? How many times can I do this?

Should I apply to change the conditions of my visa on the IEC to visitor? How long does this take? What happensifmy IEC expires while this is happening?

I pretty much need to stay here until August at the earliest, November at the latest (that is when my lease is up). If I apply to change my status to visitor, how much time am I allowed to request if I don't have any other application in? Can I just apply to stay here and to spend 8-12 months travelling? Would this be enough to convince the border gaurd that I don't intend to work (which I wouldn't if I was here as a visitor).

Any help would be great, thankyou!

Gary!

1. You apply on line for an extension as a visitor to Vegreville. Processing time is 94 days, you have "implied status" when your IEC runs out until you get a response from CIC.
2. You can going to the US for the day, but there is never a guarantee that you will be admitted for 6 months as a visitor.

Thankyou.

During this time, the 94 days on implied status, can I work, or only remain as a visitor as I have applied for a visitor extension?

Also, how long am I allowed to apply for? I would like to have at least 8months. Would I have to provide them with anything for such a long period of time? Or should I apply for shorter?

No, you can't work. You could ask for 50 years if you wanted, but be reasonable 8 months to travel and see more of Canada is reasonable request. Whether you get it or not is another question.
