Hi,

So I moved away from Ontario to another country with my husband last year, lost my OHIP coverage during the process. Find out Im preggo and defs want to have baby in Canada. My husband just got his Passport request for PR and im at 31 weeks. We've decided to send me back to Canada, and have him join soon. But this time to my sister in Nova Scotia so I can have healthcare coverage from day 1. So I applied for the card and im approved.

Situation is, after I have the baby I'm not 100% certain I will be staying in Canada. Also, my parents live in Ontario so I want to deliver the baby there. So can I deliver the baby in Ontario and still have NS cover me? If I do leave canada (1 year) without changing my address in NS how will they know?

For the first question about moving your baby to Ontario, you should ask NS health insurance agent to see if they will continue the coverage in the 3 month transition period.

And the second is that they basically do not know. As they do not have the data from the CBSA and the CBSA may not even know that you left Canada. But once they find out in any way, they will come after you badly.

Yep so since I'm returning Canadian they will cover me. Its not written in stone that I will leave right after and its not my intention to.. lets hope it works out

If you want coverage during the first three months, you'll need to stay in NS and forget about having the baby in Ontario. You'll also need to remain in NS for a number of months after having the baby if you want to avoid problems in the future.

If you end up leaving, then when you eventually return to Canada, the province will come after you for the costs of the health care you used. In cases here where we have seen the province go after the person, it always seems to be for quite a bit more than they would have paid out of pocket for the services used. These individuals can also run into issues getting coverage again once they return (they eventually get it back - it just takes longer because they have previously abused the system).
