healthcare as a visitor

hello all , I have just applied for a visitor extension and have had travelers insurance so far for the time i have been in Canada . i also have coverage through kaiser in the states , but at the border upon original visitor record entry they required that we purchase travelers insurance ......................question is, is there any more affordable or usable type medical insurance we should be doing , ,my wife is a bc resident and Canadian citizen with bc medical . we need to purchase some more time on our travel policy soon , thank you for the help
