Hi,
I am from Turkey and working as a research assistant at one of the universities in the Turkey. I came Totonto several days ago to conduct my post graduate research and financially supported by Turkish government. I have work permission, valid for 10 months but I will not earn money for that. I have not bought health insurance yet and no body at the port asked me about health insurance when entiring to Canada.

Since I am supported by Turkish goverment, it also includes my medical expenses, saying that "she is subjected to the Social Security Law No. 5510 for social security. medical expenses that may result from any accidents, sickness, surgery, etc. while she is abroad will be covered by the Social security institution, in accordance with article 66 of Law No. 5510 and the regulations of the communique on Health implementation, provided that the invoices for treatment and medical reports are retified by the Turkish Consulate".

I have this official documents with me. I wonder do I still need to by heath insurance in toronto.

No, but if you require medical treatment, it would appear that you would have to pay for it yourself and then get reimbursed from the Turkish Gov't. With a work permit you would be eligible for OHIP after 3 months.

Merhabalar,

Welcome to Toronto! As noted above, I believe you can get the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) after 3 months, since I assume you are on closed Work Permit. I couldn't send you a message to your inbox, so I would like to ask here. May I know the timeline for your Work Permit application in Ankara? How long did it take you to get it? Did you apply in person or did you mail your documents? Thank you.
