Hi everybody,

I just landed yesterday ;D but I will be going back to US where I currently study. I plan on moving to Canada permanently in August of this year. Can I apply for a health card during this period ( before August)? My husband lives in Canada and I live in Buffalo, NY. I have my health insurance in US but want to know if I can get the health card before so I won't be paying for insurance after I move during the first 3 months.

I have read you need like a hydro bill in your name or bank statements. So can I just open a bank account in Canada, get the statements mail to my husband Canadian address and then apply to the health card before August? Is this Ok or is it considerated illegal?

Thanks Smiley

No - it doesn't work that way. What you are suggesting would be health care fraud. You actually need to live in Canada a specific amount of time during your first six months. You won't be meeting that requirement. I do not recommend lying to the provincial health care system. Wait until you move to Canada permanently before you apply. Get insurance to cover yourself during the three month waiting period.

I was not sure about it and of course I don't want to make anything illegal. Thanks a lot for your answer, my husband was suggesting that but now I know what to tell him ;D

I would not call it fraud as this is something pretty simple for Canada to track.

It would be a costly mistake, however.
