Hi Nitroxn,

Check the link below:

You may be eligible for Child Tax benefit too. You will probably have to declare your World income.

I moved to Canada last year in January 2014. I was completely unaware of the GST/HST Credit (RC151 form application, not the tick box on the tax return).

Now, after more than 13 months of being in Canada, I am going to send in my filled RC151 to my tax centre for the year I became an immigrant to Canada. I will also file a tax return next month.

Do you think I would be able to claim the GST/HST credits retroactively from the day I became a resident of Canada for tax purposes, or is my benefit lost? Due to the non-application, I had not been receiving GST/HST Credit in 2014 (and didn't even know it was a thing until I started studying tax in November).

Yes you will receive HST/GST credit payments if you are eligible(Most of the people are eligible). Payments are issued quarterly by CRA.
You might also be eligible to receive Sales tax benefit and Energy and property tax credit for all the rent you are paying. You must have all the receipts, or any proof of payment for rent. Lease agreements is not considered a proof.

You can also be eligible for Child tax benefits if your children are under 18 years of age.

Yes I am receiving HST/GST credit payments, OTB, etc. from past 4 years, I also work in same field. So, Let me know if you have any more questions about income tax. :)

I am single, no kids but my younger brother does receive CCTB so I know about that since I filled in the forms for that myself.

Its the GST/HST thing I didn't know about that we could receive it for the year we migrated, I just assumed one would normally get it after spending a year or something when one files tax return...but thank you. I think I'd be eligible for GST/HST credit, not in doubt about that, just wondering if they'd pay it retroactively to me as well, since I've missed 4 quarterly payments by not applying for it through sending in an RC151.

Sales tax benefit and energy and property tax credit for rent we pay? Ontario trillium benefit? I live in British Columbia.

No separate application is required for GST/HST credit. When you file IT return, add one more letter confirming your world income for the year you landed in Canada. CRA will automatically calculate your credit based on IT return and your declaration.

Hi ! I recently sent an RC151 last sSeptember 2017 to get GST credit but I am a permanent resident since June 2016 so I wonder whether CRA will make the retroactive payments for past year automatically or should I claim a retroactive payment for last year and how ? Thanks a lot for clarifying this for me.
