Hard hard will it be to get an open work visa as a US citizen.

Im form the US and my friend, who is Canadian, just moved out to Vancouver and wants me to move up with him. We both work in film and most of our income is from freelance work so I'm not sure how to go about getting a visa since it seams like they already want you to have an employer before applying. Any advice would be great.
