Hello,

I am writing to this forum hoping someone can help me.

I am a Doctor from my home country and was sponsored here. I am currently a PR card holder and been here for almost 2 years.

I had an argument or fight with my wife(sponsor) and pushed her and 911 was involved. I was taken to the police station and an assault case was made against me.

I have been since talking to some criminal lawyers and since I am not working I have no money to go to a lawyer but the legal aid mentioned that I can plead guilty, plus since I have no prior criminal convictions or records, the charges will be withdrawn and I will have to attend some anger management counselling and complete a court mandated program. i am ok with all this but my questions are

1. If I plead guilty and charges will be withdrawn, will this cause issues getting my passport later in a couple of years
2. If I plead guilty and the charges are withdrawn will I have an issue when I go for my Canadian Medical Board exam.
3. If I plead guilty and the charges are withdrawn will there be an issue with my resident status.

Please answer this and thanks in advance.

If you plead guilty charges won’t be withdrawn. You may plead guilty to a lesser charge. This is something you need to speak to your lawyer about. The are potential career and immigration implications. You may want to call the college of physician and surgeon about your potential criminal charges. As you know it is very hard to get licensed in Canada to begin with so any kind of record will not help your changes at securing a residency spot. If you are able to pay for your licensing exams how are you not able to afford a lawyer?
