I wish to apply for a visit visa (from the UAE), to accompany my son (18) who is starting university there this fall, for a few weeks. I am applying for both, my visit visa and his study permit through my ircc account. Assuming my purpose of visit should be specified as 'Other' in the form (because other options such as 'Tourism', 'Business', and 'To visit family and/or friends' don't match my purpose), why am I being asked to provide an invitation letter? It is not even listed as optional which means it is required. I do have a nephew in the same city but what would he write in the letter? How can I go about this?

You don’t need an invitation letter to apply for a TRV.

It's listed under supporting documents for me on the portal in my document checklist with 'required' written next to it.
Well, first you are not applying under Other. That is for transit or medical appointment. You are coming for tourism. Change that.

Thank you for your help. But just to clarify, it's tourism even if my only reason for visiting is to get my son settled in university?
