Hi. I recently finished my Oath ceremony and got my certificate. However, they made a mistake with the spelling of my name and I have applied for a new one. Therefore I was unable to make a passport. I have a Valid indian passport and a USA visa- which I have not given up yet, and I urgently need to travel by ROAD into USA to pick up my parents at the airport. Can I cross into USA and back with my current Canada Citizenship certificate? I just need to go for about an hour.

Your Indian passport is no longer valid. If you travel with it into USA then you have to pay a penalty (Around $323) each trip. You can enter into Canada with Citizenship certificate in your own vehicle but it has incorrect name on it so it won't identify you. Even with correct name at the border it is a hassle but they will eventually let you in If have copy of your oath letter, copy of PR card and so on. (Depends on the officer you encounter).

I strongly suggest to avoid the trip if you can.

@pearlyliz,
There is no way for India to know of ur trip to US on
Indian passport unless they check the stamps when u surrender the passport. Returning to Canada, your certificate with wrong spelling will do if accompanied by copies of ur oath letter, and the letter u sent for fixing the name on the CIT certificate.

Hi Pearlyliz,

Chikloo is correct about the penalty and the current penalty is $343 per travel on Indian passport after acquiring foreign nationality. However, there is a statement that a grace period of 3 months from the date of naturalization (or Canadian citizenship certificate) will be allowed for travel on Indian passport. Please read the last sentence in the link below.

So, call the Indian consulate and clarify reg. the grace period. You may be OK to travel with your previous Indian passport, if they confirm that.
