Goods to follow shipping questions

In 2 weeks will be landing in Edmonton from the US. I don't want the hassle of bringing a ton of stuff with me so I have gotten my life into about 16 boxes. That is almost too little to ship freight but too much to pack in extra suitcases.

I've read here in the forum about filling out the goods to follow list, but I am a little foggy on the process after I land. If I understand correctly, I have to get my list stamped during my landing. My boxes will get stopped at a customs clearance warehouse and I will have to provide them with my stamped list before they are released to me.

Is this the procedure for only UPS/FedEx or other mailing and freight is different? I just can't imagine moving an entire house in a freight truck only to have the truck stopped somewhere until I am able to show up and show the stamped list.

Is it correct to think freight would be a better option if it doesn't get stopped at a clearance warehouse?
Do I have to go to the clearance warehouse personally and pick it up or do you just email/fax a copy of the stamped list to them and then the shipment resumes to me?
How does the customs clearance warehouse know to stop the goods? Do I ship it directly there or do they automatically stop shipments that haven't paid duty or something?

Like I said, I am foggy on what happens after I make the list and don't see too much conversation about that here in the forum so any advice would be great. Thanks.
